To see the impact of higher inflation and higher interest rates on companies, just look at the earnings release for CarMax this morning. For example, higher rates are generally bad for REITs beause REITs rely on debt financing. Higher rates also mean increased borrowing costs for utilities, which carry a lot of debt because they use a lot of capital. The problem is, energy and material stocks have already been rising due to higher oil and a still strong economy. Other potential beneficiaries of higher rates with a strong economy are defensive stocks, which tend to be less interest rate sensitive, like Kroger or Walmart .

CNN —Locals in the Canary Islands are mobilizing to protest against excessive tourism, blaming visitors for pricing them out of their homes and causing environmental damage. “Every person who joins the human chain sends a strong message to the government: The Canary Islands are not willing to continue sacrificing their future,” it said in a post on Facebook published Wednesday. The group also blames local authorities for approving large tourist developments that worsen existing issues, such as increasing water shortages. “The objective is to create a committee of experts to establish common guidelines,” said Jéssica de León, minister for tourism and employment in the Canary Islands regional government, in a statement published Tuesday. Concerns about the impact of tourism are not unique to the Canary Islands.

New York CNN —Almost every month, economists expect the hot US labor market to start showing signs of exhaustion. The booming labor market has to run out of gas eventually, right? Enjoy it while it lastsHistorically speaking, there’s only so long a really good labor market can last until, for instance, a recession or tighter financial conditions disrupt it. Taken together, that could mean the life expectancy of the current labor market isn’t very long. One big reason why the labor market continues to defy expectations is the result of a surge in immigration over the past year.

CNBC's Jim Cramer reviewed last week's nonfarm payroll report and highlighted the thriving economy, telling investors not to expect imminent rate cuts from the Federal Reserve. Cramer also commented on what this report means for the state of the consumer, something always top of mind on Wall Street, as employment impacts consumer spending, he asserted. The report showed job growth in the leisure and hospitality industry, returning to pre-pandemic levels in February 2020. To Cramer, this means investors can worry less about a cash-strapped consumer, saying the data further indicates a roaring economy. "We have a robust economy, so I'm a lot less worried about this upcoming earnings season," Cramer said.
